Rotation projects available in the States lab:

  • Modeling CSF-1R responses in macrophages and neural stem cells

Prof. Angel Lee (Pharmacology) has a long standing interest in CSF-1R signaling. In collaboration with Dr. Lee, our lab has obtained Affymetrix gene expression data for responses to CSF-1 (the macrophage colony stimulating factor) in 32D cells (a mouse early myeloid cell line). We have verified specific responses using quantitative real time RT-PCR and are modeling gene expression response networks. Students will have the opportunity to learn general molecular biology, cell culture, RNA isolation, Affymetrix GeneChip analysis and bioinformatics approaches to gene expression data analysis.

  • Computational proteomics

Our research group is developing statistical tools and techniques to improve the power and reliability of mass spectroscopy based proteomics analysis. Students will have the opportunity to learn proteomics and the theory of mass spectroscopy, statistical data analysis and database theory.

  • Model based molecular biology data integration
  • We are engaged in a major data integration effort in molecular biology to link heterogeneous and error prone data sources throug the use of computational models for fundamental processes in molecular biology. Relevant technologies include automated natural language processing, statistical information retrieval and database algorithms.
