Mission

The States' research group develops advanced computational methods to extract maximal biomedical understanding from complex data in molecular biomedicine.

Goals

The development of rigorous, model based approaches to interpret experimental data in molecular biology.

Better understanding of the regulatory elements and processes modulating the expression of the human genome.

Better understanding of the origins, regulation and biology of macrophages and the innate immune system.

Better understanding of the protein components of human blood and their variation in health and disease.

Current Projects

Current projects focus on:

  • Gene expression responses to CSF-1R
  • Recognition and modeling of of distal regulatory elements in the mammalian genome
  • Modeling chromatin structure and dynamics
  • Genomic methylation
  • Alternative splicing and its regulation in normal cells and cancer
  • Automated natural language processing
  • Proteome informatics

Computational approaches

The States group uses many computaitonal technologies including simulation, classification, database construction and analysis, and parallel computation. Integration of statistical and heuristic techniques with efficient algorithm development to find new ways to solve problems of biological interest.
